Can i wrap my luggage in plastic to avoid theft outside of the US?

I am flying to the US from Ukraine. Usually when flying internally i always pack my luggage to avoid theft, but i heard that in the US they will probably check what's inside. So is it still a good idea to wrap my luggage? I guess in the worst case the US customs will take the wrap off. Please advise
